Political Science Professors Ron Seyb and Natalie Taylor talk with Ruy Teixeira, author of "Where Have All the Democrats Gone?: the Soul of the Party in an Age of Extremes," and Matthew Continetti, author of "The Right: the Hundred Year War for American Conservatism," about the shifting composition of the two political parties, the rising number of independent voters, and the implications for the future of American politics. American business culture prizes little else as highly as entrepreneurship, which often serves as a synonym for prosperity, innovation, and even freedom itself. But our celebration of entrepreneurship has a dark side. As Erik Baker, lecturer in the History of Science Program at Harvard University, will argue, efforts to promote entrepreneurship have often encouraged deference to charismatic leadership and suspicion of collective action, laying the groundwork for our current crisis of democracy. Jacob Perlow Series: 'Jewish history and the music of the Ottoman Middle East'

The Jacob Perlow Series presents "Jewish history and the music of the Ottoman Middle East," workshops and a performance exploring the intertwined histories of Jews, Muslims, and Christians in the Ottoman Empire through music. On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Joseph Alpar of Bennington College will offer a demonstration of music and song in "Singing Pirkei Avot in Istanbul: Synagogue Liturgy, Religious Propriety, and Changing Perceptions of Musical Beauty," from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Tang Teaching Museum. Lunch will be provided and is open to students, faculty, and staff; .

Alpar will also lead a singing workshop, "Kantikas de Sefarad: Songs of the Sephardim of Turkey, Greece, and North Africa," from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is limited to Skidmore community members. The series concludes with a public performance, 鈥,鈥  featuring Alpar and his ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Arthur Zankel Music Center.

Joe Walsh, a former U.S. representative from Illinois, and Fred Guttenberg, a businessman-turned-activist following his daughter鈥檚 murder in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, went from arguing with each other on social media and television to engaging in meaningful dialogue. The 鈥淭wo Dads鈥 forged a friendship through patience and civil discourse, demonstrating how people from opposite ends of the political spectrum can find common ground on contentious issues such as gun safety. As the 2024 election approaches, they share their story as a way forward for civil discourse to make the democratic principle of disagreement possible. All are invited to attend. Join Lucas Parello, assistant professor at Florida Atlantic University; Christopher Whann, political scientist at Empire State College; Mahesh Shankar, director of International Affairs; and Murat Yildiz, assistant professor of history in a discussion moderated by Pushkala Prasad, professor and Zankel Chair in Management and Business. Speakers will focus on recent elections in the Middle East, South Asia and Latin America and discuss connections to upcoming US elections. All are welcome to attend. Fall Classics Lecture: 'Ceramic Production and Community at Archaic and Classical Eleon in Central Greece'

Janelle Sadarananda, visiting assistant professor of classics, leads a talk that explores pottery and terracotta figurines dedicated at the sanctuary at the site of Eleon in Central Greece to learn about how people lived, worked, and worshipped in the Archaic and into the Classical periods (ca. 600-450 BCE). The lecture will demonstrate how a microscopic look at the ceramics and a consideration of the life cycle of the finds from production to discard reveals more about social relationships among Eleonians.
